Blind Light Rum Tasting - Round 3
Submitted by dschommer on Tue, 09/29/2009 - 09:31
The final installment of our first blind rum tasting concludes with this episode in which we battle current leader Bacardi against Cruzan and 10 Cane rum. While every rum we've tasted in our blind tasting has qualified as a good product, we can only have one winner so it will come down to round 3.
We wanted to thank everyone for all the comments. We had some great suggestions to keep in mind going forward and have learned a lot from the experience. We've seen passion behind specific brands where some people refuse to believe we "let" bacardi get this far while others defend them. You may not agree with our assessment of the brands and that is perfectly okay, everyone's palate is different.

Really cool stuff. Very
Really cool stuff. Very interesting about the Bacardi. Also it was pretty clear to me that the 10 cane was on the left (mine). I like seeing the comparison episodes.
Apples to oranges take two!
Thanks for the quick reply! And you're right my apples to oranges comparison is extreme. Maybe it's more like the difference between rye-vodka and rye-whisky, both are made from rye but both are made differently. And in the case of Rum they're made differently for different reasons. Light rum was made in a pursuit to "tame" and "civilize" the harshness of early molasses based rum --and so clarity and are smoothness are key. It was actually Bacardi who first figured it out with his "superior rum", but alas, much like Mondavi's heirs Bacardi's heirs have compromised quality for marketability. I find Rhum Agricole to have a harshness that is found in gold rums, and a taste that is vegetal like a smooth whiskey. I really don't consider it light rum, but a different type of rum all together. Rhum Agricole should really have it's own category for tasting. Also, a Rhum Agricole tasting may be interesting, since it is probably going to be next hot thing because of how it's made. There are so many similarities to the focus of single origin cane based rum as there are to the rage for single origin coffee beans and chocolate --it's any wonder why 10 Cane is owned by LVMH. Vodka was the hot thing for the past 10 years or so, now (because of the Mojito) I'm betting it's going to be Rhum Agricole.
Â
Though I like Havana Club Añejo Blanco, I didn't like Havana Club Gold. There's a harsh unsweetened chocolate flavor in gold rum that I utterly dislike. I'm actually more of a dark rum fan, and my favs are Havana Club 7, Appleton 12, and above all Barbancourt 15 (which is so different that I treat more like a cognac than a rum.)
Â
Look forward to your other tastings.
Rhum Agricole
I also am a huge fan of dark rum, I like the mature flavors and complexities to the spirit, much like I like an Añejo over a Blanco Tequila. Granted, each have their place.
Â
Although I would love to do a Rhum Agricole tasting I've not had the opportunity to find many brands besides 10 Cane in the larger market. Depaz is a Rhum Agricole but it's aged more, I believe, than the 10 cane.
Â
While I was unsure about putting it into the tasting, as the taste is a bit more "green' or "organic" compared to the others, there were many people who had the expectation that 10 Cane was included. Perhaps because most average folks see it as a rum in the gold/light category. The average drinker doesn't care if it's molasses or sugar cane, they're only concerned with, "how does it taste?" If I had a 100% pure rum show I would split it off with those of its own "family" (given I could find them).
Â
Do you know of any other good rhum agricoles? I can track down the importers and see if they can send me samples of their spirit.
Â
rum
I am sipping between Bacardi white and 10 cane as I type this, so please excuse some typos.
Â
Martinique actually has an AOC on Rhum Agricole, and their big brand is Depaz and St. James. I believe that La Favorite is another one. I think La Cayennaise and La Belle Cabrese are Rhum Agricole's from French Guyana(?) Most Brazilian rums are Agricoles, though there are people who split hairs finer than I do and claim Brazilian rums are Cachaças (which I believe is the difference between a bay leaf and a laurel leaf).
Â
Depaz is definitely aged longer than 10 Cane. And as I think about it, it does get muddy when trying to draw lines as to which Rum is which. My favorite Rum, Barbancourt 15, doesn't really fit as a traditional rum nor does it fit as a Rhum Agricole.
Â
Almost done with my rum. As a wine lover I can appreciate the "terroir" that 10 Cane brings in its aroma. I get a hot humid/dewy grassy fields smell in 10 Cane and a weird metallic banana like smell in Bacardi light. Nevertheless, I don't think one is better than the other --just different. I'll use Bacardi for mixing and 10 Cane for sipping on the rocks.
Sipping Rum
For sipping rum, I would lean towards Don Q Extra Añejo because it is ... well ... really awesome. I've brought it to parties with me and people are blown away by the fact that it's a rum.
Â
I'll checkout some of those brands and see what I can find.
comparing apples to oranges
I agree that Cruzan should have won, but I'm really surprised you compared Bacardi and Cruzan to 10 Cane. 10 Cane rum is a "Rhum Agricole," and it's made entirely differently then Bacardi and Cruzan. Though 10 Cane is made from sugar cane, it's is made from sugar cane juice while Cruzan and Bacardi are made from molasses. The process is completely different, and from what I've tasted it's really a different product. We wouldn't include Corn Whiskey in a Corn Vodka tasting, and so I'm suprised you included a "Rhum Agricole" in a light Rum tasting. Other than that, I agree that Cruzan should have won in terms of sipping. Actually, I believe that Havana Club Añejo Blanco is the best for sipping, however, it'll be a while before we can freely make comparisons in the US. Also, I'm surprised that Appleton White or Matusalen white label didn't make it, but then again, like Bacardi white, they're more suited for mixing than sipping.
Oranges to Grapes
I have Havana Club Añejo, gold, but I wasn't able to find a white when I was in Germany. So I've got Havana for the next tasting.
Â
I understand that Rhum Agricole isn't exactly the same as molasses based rum but the major factor, for me, was "stuff people can buy" and tasting the differences between them. It's more of a way to inform people of tastes and sit down and say "this is what we like." Sugar Cane rum doesn't taste exactly like that of a standard molasses rum and they tend to cost more as well. I've got Depaz Rhum Agricole and it has its own unique "organic" style taste.
Â
But, is it apples to oranges? I don't believe so, I would think it's more like Gala Apples vs. Fiji apples or Granny Smith. Both Molasses and Sugar cane distilled products are "rum" - they just have unique taste profiles like a Gala apple compared to a Granny Smith, Fiji or Red Delicious. Couldn't they all be in an apple tasting to figure out which tastes best on your palate? I'd say yeah.
Â
Cruzan and 10 Cane both have a good place on anyones shelf and I'd highly suggest buying both. If nothing more than to sit down and run your own tasting. However, I believe people will find cocktails that fit each one and be happy with what they've purchased.
I enjoyed you trying to
I enjoyed you trying to pretend it wasn't obvious which was which in this one. Â One tastes light, one tastes aged, and one tastes vegetal. Â I wonder which they could be? ;-)
lol
I figured (hoped) the "organic" vegital one was 10 Cane. I had a good feeling the "rubbing alcohol" taste was Bacardi but nobody wants to be wrong, right :) Really, color wasn't the issue, all three had entirely different tastes.
AWESOME!... and scoring.
Despite all the current comments, I thought this eipsode series is awsome. I personally, don't have the opportunity to buy 10 or so different rums or whatever, to determine which I would conclusively drink and these types of episodes make it that much easier to make a decision (although its hard to find all those brands in Australia lol). I really like the idea of a "tournament" of alcohol tasting, which would make it much fairer.
Â
The only complaint I have is your scoring system (and I think you should have one, rather than saying "this one is good, this one is worse" as philm suggested out). Similarly to philm I have no idea what your basing your scores on. To me it seems like your trying to mimic professional critics by using the same 100 point system, with no real justification. The way they base their scores, the reasons are not revealed to the viewers, but rather just an overall score. On your show I think it would be great if you did reveal why a particular alcohol scored a particular score, and a great way to do this is by using a series of component scores (taste, burn, flavour, etc) and adding them up to achieve the final score. Plus this may take into account people who are looking for a specific 'component' (e.g. flavour) and don't care about the rest.
Â
Overall, this show is absolutely awsome and I hope you don't discontinue it because of people's comments like "I only want to see cocktails" and "I don't have time for this". Its great that your doing this and sharing it with the online community.
Â
THANKS!
A Separate Show
Just to be clear, we're looking to prototype a new series of shows that would run in parellel to this one so people can watch both shows, one show or whatever one you want. My goal here was to show everyone what we're thinking so they can comment and let us know if it was a worthy cause or not.
Â
Basically, to setup a second show is a lot of work. I'll have to design another websites, buy more service space to host the videos and record another set of shows and Jennifer will have to edit them. Despite the work, we'd like to do it but only if we find that people consider it an interesting idea. Given we've got a crowd of folks that are passonate about cocktails and spirits, we knew you folks would be able to give us valuable information to justify such a show format.
Â
Once we build a scoring system that's people think is worthy we can work through the details (logo, site design, show name, etc.) then we can try more show pilots on a new channel and I can let you all know where to go to see it. That way, it won't constantly interrupt the show flow of Common Man Cocktails and it can build its own audience or expand this one.
Â
Sound good?
"Blind Light Rum Tasting" Thank You
Thanks for doing the Rum tasting , I enjoyed them all, way better then the taquiella tasting, since taquiella is on the top of the list of dislikes. Will there be a dark Rum tasting next?
Lilhawkk
Dark Rum
I want to do a gold rum, dark rum, tequila (sorry), flavored rums, whiskey's and all types of spirits next. These will, of course, be a separate show (not Common Man Cocktails) but I'll let everyone know where it's going to be hosted when we set that up.
Quite good
My only complaint is that bacardi had to go through 2 episodes to get to the last show while 10 cane and Cruzan just show up. Since you probably can't do 10 or so bottles in one episode, I'd rather see 1 winner for each episode up until the last one where you compare all the episode winners. Level the playing field a little.
M, you can always just cut ep
M, you can always just cut ep and continue same show on ep02, if you are worried about youtube
Proud to be awesome.
Cut up
Yeah, I know, but it's a huge pain in the ass and disk space. All work is done in 1080i video and I use services to "blast" the video to every place on the Internet. Having to re-split the video and re-encode it twice takes a few additional hours and work to get it done.
Â
What I'd like, is for them to approve me as a publisher so I could post extended editions... unfortunately I don't have the viewership there yet to qualify.
Wow, nice idea
I like that idea, have a "tournament" of types rather than carrying one person all the way through. That would be very cool I think.
my review
I find these episodes kinda dissapointing. First of all - I'm coming here to see cocktails, not straight alcohols ;)
Secondly - point system is not clear to me for now. What are your criteria? Why 87 points? Why not 89 or 85? Bacardi receiving 3 different scores in 3 episodes ads up to the confusion :) You could equally use 10-point scale, or just give 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in the episode.
Finally - I'm one of those Europeans, who don't have access to brands you're showing. Bacardi is the most popular rum here, we of course have more brands available, none of the remaining 8 though.
Â
Now, I like to see a tasting episode from time to time. 3 in a row however is too much for me. I'd also like to see you concentrate on tastes, flavours, without giving any points - just like you did with orange liqueurs. That kind of tasting episode I liked much better.
Â
Give us some tasty recipe now, will ya? :)
Roger that!
The rest are cocktails, two bailey's cocktails coming this week. These three were more of a test-set to see if anyone would be interested in the style of show and get some feedback (as you've mentioned in the rest of your post). All of which is being recorded so that when we work towards a real show (with its own video stream, website, etc.) we'll know a bit about what people may like to see.
Â
I'll still do some tastings from time to time just not a full round-by-round battle. Regardless, it's good to know you're not interested in such a show so we know what type of person may watch both, what type of person may watch just cocktail recipes, etc. All good info!
Great episide/series
Great episide/series, no mather what other people might have espected. Can't wait to see more!
Â
And besides pointing out how the rums score on your palates, it also gives an indicator on the subtile (or less subtile) taste differences between the different brands. What in my opinion is the most important of this whole series. Since i would probably have a different preference in tasting profiles, so now i can judge what i personally maybe will like more.
Â
To end with a fitting finisher: Awesome.
I learned a lot as well
I learned some cool stuff, like don't assume the big brands aren't going to be able to compete against the more niche products. I also learned to pay attention to the difference in "burn" factor, sometimes it's in the throat, othertimes on the tongue and in some situations the lips or entire mouth feel some tickling burn.
Â
The big take-away, in my opinion is this:
Lastly, I think there is some viability in a show of this calibur, we had tons of great reactions both positive and negative ... even if we lose a few people along the way :)
Is this me or you already
Is this me or you already knew that Bacardi will be 3rd, 2nd is Cane and 1st - Cruzan?
Â
EDIT: Agree with peteywonderfull.
Proud to be awesome.
Predictions
I had a feeling that Bacardi would be third, I wasn't sure if 10 cane was going to beat Cruzan or not. I've used 10 Cane and Cruzan a lot but didn't know which we'd both average higher on a score. Initially, I was fearful of the Cruzan color because distillers try to make their silver/white rums actually "white." The darkness made me think the quality was going to be lower.
Â
10 Cane is a cane rum, it's going to have a unique flavor that it can call its own. But, is that unique flavor better or worse than the others? To me, the sweetness was nice but it wasn't as warm and inviting as the Cruzan. Side-by-side it made the Bacardi a bit more rubbing-alcohol tasting when alone Bacardi doesn't exhibit it as much.
Â
All three had clean finishes, which I deem important regardless. Do you believe 10 cane should have won?
Honestly, I have no idea,
Honestly, I have no idea, never tied it :-)
Â
As for me, it looked sort of changed, like Jennifer looking somewhere (implying that she is thinking) seemed like bad acting. I haven't listened to first few mins, so if this one is wrong..: you said something like you won't look at the alcohols but did that all the time, especially when smelling
Proud to be awesome.
rum tasting
It was difficult to see anything with the rubber mat down so that wasn't a huge issue after all. I'm sure Jennifer was thinking, smelling an alcohol and trying to bring the flavors to your mind isn't always an easy task, especially if there is a strong alcohol taste.
Â
Â
but still a good episode
i dont know if this should count because you were obviously trying to get bacardi in last. and i could even tell when you where drinking the 10 cane
biased...
obviously biased against bacardi, given that you could SEE which rum was which by the color. should have used dark glasses. also, since you tasted the bacardi twice before, you knew the taste pretty well and you could recognise it. =/ ... not a true blind tasting
Bacardi Last
There was no need to try to have it come in last, the other two had unique flavors that made Bacardi stand out as the lacking product pitted against the two. One with a sweeter taste profile, one with a caramel profile and Bacardi with a lighter taste that brought neither of these tastes to the table.
Â
We would have had to try and make it come in first, which would have bee unjusitifed and leave people asking "what the heck?" Did I want Bacardi to win? No. I didn't want it to win any of the rounds but it did. If you don't think it was justified to place into 3rd place, try a blind tasting for yourself and see which you pick. I highly doubt you'll choose Bacardi in the situation.
