Blue Snowflake

Visit AwesomeDrinks.com for glassware and more!

It's the "holiday season" and we're launching our first seasonal beverage, the Blue Snowflake. It's not a hot cocktail nor does it contain peppermint or any type of cinnamon (or nutmeg!). It does, however, look pretty cool and has a great taste and a good seasonal name so why not?

Plus, we're launching it on the first real day of heavy snow fall here in New Hampshire.

Hpnotiq is like?

Can you compare hpnotiq and Passoa, because we cant get hpnotiq in Eu.. :)

Nice show,

hpnotiq in Eu

you can't get french product in the EU? that would be pretty odd...
I know one online store in Poland which carries Hpnotiq. price is OMG though...

http://www.urban-drinks.de/la

€20?!

oh my, in Poland it costs over €50....

I usually

I usually shop on the other side of the border in Denmark (so I will be in Germany), because it is cheaper in Germany. Still i havent found hqnotic.

Yep, I usually buy at

Yep, I usually buy at barfish.de but they don't have this one + their shipping is like 30 EUR, but it's for 1-6 bottles, so only worth to buy during "shopping season", like when you have a massive list of new alcohols to try :-)

So far, in my list:

Chocolate Vodka (sooooooooooooo want to try that chocolate martini recipe)
Apricot Brandy
Sloe Gin
Cointreau
De Kuyper Blackberry liqueur
-- one more to go

pivos, in that urban site, shipping is ~10 EUR, which is the cheapest I ever found (shipping + hpntq) in .de sites (shipping worldwide).

Proud to be awesome.

shipping

€30 for 6 bottles... this means I have to find 6 bottles cheaper  by €5 on average...
it's a pity that this second shop you linked has much smaller selection of alcohols.

Hey, I found another shop,

Hey, I found another shop, haven't tested them yet so be careful.

But their shipping is:
19,90€ for up to 18 bottles

http://www.conalco.de

At least to Lithuania. Also, they have wider selection than my previous mentioned, urban site. 21,90 € for Hpnotiq Liqueur.

Just checked BarFish.de and actually, I was wrong, last time I paid ~22 EUR + VAT

Subtotal: 49.30EUR
German Post (Dispatch to LT: (1 x 4.64 kg)): 22.61 EUR
VAT 19% included: 11.48EUR
Total: 71.91EUR

Proud to be awesome.

conalco

wide selection, but it's a pity that pretty often they only sell multiples of given alcohol (like 2x 0.7l, or even 6x 0.7l).
where have you found the international shipping cost? I don't speak German, perhaps that's why I wasn't able to find them :)

I just email them :-)   You

You may use translate.google.com to get info on where contact buttons are :-)

I know basics of the German language, but not enough for succesful communication. So, I can browse those shops, but I hope they speak English in case I contact them :)

Yep, they do reply in

Dude.

It's about 30 Euro to ship products from amazon.de to my house in New Hampshire! Shipping half the distance should be half the cost!

Teriffic

What a teriffic offer! :)

Passoa

Passoa? I'll have to see if that's findable over here first :)

Cool

It was just your describtion that reminded me of Passoa. ;)

Btw Derrick, you should try this recipe:

Why Santa has a naughty list.

Have not done it my self since im out of Gin, but sounds nice.

Question

Lol... had no idea what half the comments were on this page. Anyway... I think you should question the recipes you make on the show after you make the cocktail. This episode was a perfect example of just that. Adding a "splash" of vodka seems very amateur and unnecessary. I know you're trying to stay true to the recipe, but sometimes it seems like there is a fault in it, and I think you shouldn't restrain yourself from pointing that out.

Great eipsode/show!

Thanks

Thanks for the comments, perhaps, if I have time, etc. I can do a version of both and see if you can tell the difference. I think, however, some drinks are sorta created to draw in a certain crowd... that might want to get "drunk" on something sweet. Hpnotiq sorta draws that crowd I believe, or at least it seems.

There seems to be a demographic for hip & cool cocktails and I think some of these brands are trying to tap into that and with that comes some not-so-interesting additions such as splashing yet another 40 ABV alcohol on top to "make it cool."

Thoughts?

Volume

I think the vodka plays a small part in this drink, but still noticeable. I think first of all the vodka adds the last bit of volume to the drink (making it fill the glass more) and it dilutes the other liqueurs a little bit chaning the taste and texture a bit. I haven't tried the drink so I couldn't say for sure, but that's my guess.

Turn up the Volume!

I'm sure, if anything, it adds volume to the drink much like a splash of water (or ice) would. Perhaps the term 'splash' should have been changed to 1/2 oz. or 2/3 oz. or something, to bring a little additional volume without opaque values like "splash." I mean, how does one measure a "splash"? It seems to vague to me and allows the drink to be created with different measures each time leaving a sense of consistency in the dust.

Agree

I agree. I was referring to this drink, but I meant all drinks with vodka in them. There are many drinks where vodka will add some additional volume, but not so much in this particular drink (only 4.2%). I checked with www.drinksmixer.com, they define a "splash" as 1/8 oz (3.7 ml) =)

1/8th

I've never seen a jigger that measures 1/8th, I don't think that even shows up on any scale of measure that I have for liquid it's so tiny. I can see that for, say, sambuca, absinthe, galliano or creme de menthe, but not vodka. Those really cut right through with power, so you don't need much.

This looks really cool! Wish

This looks really cool! Wish i could get Hpnotq over where i live, because i really wanna try this. Are there any alternatives to Hpnotiq? Anybody know anything? Also, i think i have watched every episode of your show now, and i dont think i have ever seen a pourer on any of your bottles. Did a pourer kill your friend and now you hate them? Why dont you use pourers? IT BOGGLES MY MIND!!! Anyway, thanks for another great episode!

Hi, Kristoffer. You could order the hypnotic liqueur at your local monopoly or at the Internet. I've orderd a couple of bottles and it was no problem (just about 30 NOK) =)

They take orders like that,

They take orders like that, event though its not on the monopoly website? I asked them about some other stuff like that, and then they were all like "no we cant get that." Maybe Stavanger monopoly are more kind. I will check with them guys when i am in there next time anyway. Thanks for the tip!

Spelling

The "Hypnotic" has a weird spelling (Hpnotiq). That's why you couldn't find it. Here's a Linky =)

green

Well its green because you got a yellow pineapple juice, next time you should buy an transparent pineapple juice =) Mine was atleast blue and tbh you wouldnt order that drink if you were at a bar. Kinda gay =)

Clear pineapple juice

I've never seen a clear pineapple juice, but that would definitely help it retain it's color. And, yes, I'd not order this at a bar :)

Hpnotiq

You guys have hpnotiq over there? I think this is a growing trend, the "blends" of alcohol with stunning colors, X-Rated is another and there are a few others too.

Nop, but few .de shops got

Nop, but few .de shops got it. That's where I usually get stuff like X-Rated, Midori, Butterscotch, etc.

Dot DE

Ah, sehr gut, sprechen Sie Deutch? :)

Deutsch

Hallo, Derrick! Ich spreche ein bischen Deutsch! Dass ist sehr gut weil wenn du nach Norwegen kommst mussen wir nicht english sprechen! Wir können Deutsch reden =) Oder ich könte dich ein bischen Norwegish lernen! Erste Lektion: Guten Tag = God dag.

I love writing german, but I don't know if I got it all right. How come you know german Derrick? I have my german from school (And my mother is German! But I didn't learn it from her; she speaks Norwegian)

German

Before my daughter was born I wanted to teach her a second language early, or at least have the knowledge that English isn't the only language. So, as an adult, I started taking German. I think that was around 2001 or so, so I've been doing it for a few years. I try to practice when I'm in Germany, only speaking to the locals in German. It's harder with my cooworkers as knowing German terms for all the technology I deal with daily isn't easy for me (yet).

I take classes every Wednesday night and continue to do so with hopes to someday be completely fluent. I listen to German audio podcasts as well, that helps me with immersion while I'm in the US.

Also, ja, ich spreche auch ein bissen Deutsch. Ich habe zwei kinder und Sie spricht mit mir ein bisschen. Ich lese viele Bücher mit meine Tochter und Sohn am Schlafenszeit. (ew, dass war schwer! :) )

God dag!

That's great!

I think it's great that you're learing new stuff as an adult and especially that you're teaching it to your kids! I want to do that too when I get kids of my own some day. I've recently been thinking about taking french classes. It would be cool to know one more language. I find that the more languages you know the easier it is to learn a new one. Maybe I could learn some spanish after that, who knows =) What do your whife think about you and the kids having a "secret language"? :-P Does she take classes as well?

Languages

My wife took German with me for the first few years but found it difficult to learn in the setting. Unlike "real school" where you've got a few additional hours a week, a structured course outline, tests/quizes and such, the organization I learn from is more "open ended" learning. We do some reading, talk about the book, listen to the audio version and converse in class but we don't have as strict a structure and enforced learning via quizes/tests.

I took three years of Spanish (Jennifer took three as well) back in High School, so it wasn't our first language. Technically, Spanish would be more sensible as there are many spanish speaking people around (unfortunately, many do the "low income" jobs and those stereotypical things) while German isn't spoken as much. However, I've found a bigger use of German in my industry, lots of German programmers and technical folks so it does come in handy.

My father's side of the family originated in Germany so I thought learning my "old language" would be kinda neat, and something to pass down to the other Schommers of next generation. :)
