Dafne Martini
Submitted by dschommer on Thu, 12/03/2009 - 10:36

We're testing out our orange bitters for this episode, Angostura is finally selling them in our area. The Dafne Martini is a dry cocktail with nice elegant flavors and a bitter orange taste all wrapped around some big ol' gin.
Try this out, see if you taste more pear than we did, perhaps we used too much bitters. However, the orange bitters are tasty and work well, no regrets with too much bitters in this cocktail!

DRY!!!!
I used the same ingredients except I used absolute vodka. A hint of orange peel but GIN is a guarantee. I enjoy a Gin Martini with olives. I would like to have this with a garnish. Hey Derrick, the Gin and Vodka is like the lemon and lime? Keep up the great reviews! Thanks
Awesome!
Awesome, glad you enjoyed it. Absolute should work perfectly as well, glad to see the feedback from new or "quieter" viewers too. Makes me smile inside.
Â
Okay, and outside :)
so uhh...
what exactly is a dry martini as opposed to any other martini??
Â
i have never had a martini before, been curious about them but never had one
Â
also how goes/went your search for tequila rose??
Dry vs. Non-Dry
A Dry martini sorta leaves your mouth dry after you take a sip, almost sucking out the saliva. It's much the opposite of a sweeter drink which makes you salivate a bit. Sour isn't really the opposite of sweet, it's just a different set of buds. I think dry is the opposite of sweet, more like a dry wine vs. a sweeter wine or a dry champagne.
thanks
thanks
Â
also, in your opinion, which is better gin or vodka martinis??...or are they so different they cannot be compared??
James Bond Martini
My favourite is the James Bond Martini (a combination of both vodka and gin). If you're not used to drinking martinis, this would be a way to get used to them.
Â
James Bond Martini:
4Â cl gin
1.5 cl vodka
.75 cl dry vermouth
Â
1 1/4Â oz gin
1/2 oz vodka
1/4 oz cl dry vermouth
Â

Well, I AM Derrick
And I can tell you. Vodka Martini's are boring. Vodka is a neutral grain spirit, it brings very little to the table. You talk to a professional mixologist and they'll tell you "there should be only one brand of vodka" and the reason is... they're all the same. The goal is to get it as tasteless as possible and the winner gets... nothing? There is nothing to enjoy. Now, add some dry vermouth and you've got nothing to enjoy that's dry too!
Â
Gin, however, comes in many unique styles. An American Dry, from my experience has a bit of orange peel "zest" to it, G'Vine Floraison is very floral with almost a flowery nose. A standard london dry is going to bring some juniper and a bit of dryness along with other aroma's.
Â
Tanquery brings pinesol cleaner "juniper up in your face" action.
Â
To make a long story short, each brand of gin is a different experience. A classic "martini" is basically straight gin with a bit of added dry/sweet (dry martini, sweet martini) and a garnish (perhaps some olive juice to really change it up). Gin Martini's can taste different with different brands. A "good vodka" shouldn't bring any real flavor to the table...what's the point?
Â
A vodka fan will argue against my theory and, if they didn't, I'd be upset. I just don't grasp the idea of being that big a fan of an alcohol that's filtered down to nothingness.
guess that settles it
well since i like things that taste like something i am guessing the gin martini would be my best bet XD
I am no Derrick but as for
I am no Derrick but as for me, they both suk :-)
Proud to be awesome.
No idea how can anyone enjoy
No idea how can anyone enjoy dry drinks.
Proud to be awesome.
Dry!
What's the problem with dry drinks? I like the change up myself.
I just hate that feeling in
I just hate that feeling in your mouth, after you taste the drink.
Proud to be awesome.
Dry in the mouth
I don't mind a bit of dry in the mouth, but when they are way over-dry, that bothers me. This one isn't that bad...but, if you just don't like dry you probably wouldn't care for it anyway :)
Bit off topic but: just
Bit off topic but: just bought a bottle of bison grass vodka. $7 for 700 ml (70 cl) bottle, beat that :-)
Proud to be awesome.

But then again, the local liquors are priced around €7/8,- around here aswel.
Â
And about the video, funny how you can get *used* to some flavours, and be able to enjoy them. Since i do recall a martini audiopodcast regarding you and gin =P. I still can't really enjoy gin, it keeps making me think im eating a juniper tree.
But i did get used to wiskey in a simular way.
Juniper Tree's
What type of gin are you using that tastes like juniper trees?? On Tanquary....
No clue what the brand was
No clue what the brand was, i was out somewhere (with allot of noise and busy bartenders). But i have had the bombay sapphire aswel, and that was much much better.
Still not really my thing, but like i said, i might get used to it after getting *exposed* to it once in a while.
I remember someone from
I remember someone from podcast said this about gin:
Â
Some guy saw a juniper tree and said: yeah, I could totally drink that!
Proud to be awesome.
No doubt
Yeah, the gin podcast was done by my cousin doug and I, and that sounds like something Doug would say.

I envy you!
You guys have it soooo good! A bottle of Bison Grass (70cl) in my country costs 54 US dollars! If i lived in the US, i would propably become a drunkard! Spirits are cheaper than water over there! Come take a vacation in Norway, our prices will blow your mind!
-Even monkeys fall from trees-
Well, technically speaking
Technically, he's not from the US and he's closer to real Bison Grass (the actual grass) than I am; for us, it's USD $28.99. Much more than $7!
Â
But, not USD $54 :)
Haha, it's only for non
Haha, it's only for local vodka's and liquors. But 54 USD is quite messed up.
Proud to be awesome.
There is no such thing as
There is no such thing as "too much bitters", bitters is awesome! Good episode! I want to try this out, but they dont sell pear vodka where i live. I love the color on this drink though, its really nice. Great job!

Pear Vodka
You may be able to make something similar using regular vodka and perhaps a pear schnapps? Like I said, you're not getting much pear from this, maybe even leaving it out would be an option.
