Hot Apple Toddy

Visit AwesomeDrinks.com for glassware and more!

The Hot Apple Toddy is much like the original toddy but with some apple cider. This is a good holiday drink with seasonal flavor and style, it's warm so it will be good for those chilly days after shoveling a pile of snow. Or, for those that don't get snow, just enjoy the fact that you don't and we do.

Mentho-Lyptus

The Halls brand makes a cough drop called Mentho-Lyptus, which is probably what she was referring to.

Indeed she is

Montho-Lyptus would be it. But Mentalyptus is something used to cure brain issues... okay, I made that up.

Is cider sweeter or more sour when compared to juice?

Proud to be awesome.

It's not as sweet. I would

It's not as sweet. I would say more tart rather than sour, though.  It's basically apple juice that has been made from tarter apples and then not filtered or pasteurized.

Cider

To me, cider isn't "sour" but it's not as sweet as apple juice. It's more "full bodied" tasting more like the full apple, skin and all. While the juice tends to be lighter, crisper and a bit more sweet. I think the sweetness of both is probably about the same, but, because of the other darker more full flavors of the cider, you're getting more balance than with the juice.

Another characteristic of

Another characteristic of cider: a lot of what you get depends on what kind of apples are used in the pressing.  Some apples produce a sweeter or more acidic, rounder or more one-dimensional profile. I'm in no way an expert on apples or on cider, but most producers vary the mix to provide a consistent product. And some don't and go commando. Try several before you settle if you can, otherwise adapt the recipe re sweetness or booze to what cider you can get.

Using whiskey produces the toddy effect (being from TN I'd rely on JD), but I prefer mulling the cider and spiking with Laird's bonded apple brandy. I get more apple character that way, totally love that.
