Orange Liqueur Tasting
Welcome to the orange liqueur tasting episode, it's a bit longer than most video's but includes our reaction to some popular liqueurs on the market that have orange flavors. Our goal wasn't just to find a few good brands to suggest but to describe the brands and describe their aromas and tastes so that you, the viewer, can decide what fits you best.
Of course, the best way to know is to try them all. This isn't an option for everyone so we're hoping our little tasting gives you a more narrow selection to choose from next time you hit the store!
Please let us know what you think of the show, length and format because we're thinking of doing a series of these for Blanco, Reposado and Añejo tequilas.

sipping
Which out of the cointreau, patron or grand marnier is best for sipping also for mixing with some type of juice or soda?
Sipping Orange Liqueur
Sipping depends much on your tastes and likes, I've always sipped Grand Marnier first, but the Patron Citronage is a very fun little product and cointreau is a classic. I think for those looking for more orange-peel flavors, Citronage may be the way to go, while the smoothness of a Grand Marnier or Cointreau is always a good time as well.
Â
I've never sat down to sip a citronage, it might be "too much" as a sipping beverage where Grand Marnier is more subtle but only experimentation will tell. If you want to do "what everyone else is doing" sip grand marnier. :)
grand marnier
I know triple-sec, curacao, cointreau and grand marnier, so can't tell about the other. Of these I find Grand Marnier to be the best for sipping.
Unfortunately, GM is bit too expensive for me now. I mean, I could buy it, but prefer to buy 2 other high quality liquors for the same price.
Fortunately, my wife just got GM as a birthday gift this month, so I can finally enjoy the taste. and it's absolutely fantastic. It just seems to be created for sipping :)
I agree, an Irish Cream
I agree, an Irish Cream tasting would be great. I always wondered whether or not the $9.99 was okay for Feeney's or if I should pay the $23 for Bailey's. Hmmm....
Irish Cream
I'm not even sure I can find anything else besides Bailey's at the store, I'll have to check next time I go.
You should try whiskeys :P
You should try whiskeys :P More than once though (episodes). Maybe would even find the one which you like. I recommend black label of johnny walker. The way you describe drinks would make that episode awesome, so many flavors, different smells, different after taste experience, different taste when using with water, ice or coke... Endless possibilities :-)
Â
Â
JW is a scotch whisky
Johnny Walker is a Scotch Whisky, I'm not adverse to those anymore (since doing the audio show on Scotch Whisky). I'm moving more into whiskey (bouron/kentucky style) slowly. Unfortunately, most whiskey products tend to be a costly purchase and much of my higher expense alcohols have either come from a slow-buy approach (one or two here and there building a collection) or from brand sampling (brands sending stuff in for review).
Â
I do want to get my hands on some JW, although I'd love Blue Label :)
Haha, I remember that
Haha, I remember that episode.
Â
I'd love to try Blue as well, just noticed Green one being imported to our country, will give it a try very soon.
What country?
What country are you in? I cannot recall but I thought I knew once.
Lithuania. We are famous for
Lithuania. We are famous for the highest suicidal rates in the world, haha
Â
Just checked price for green label, it's ~80 USD here and ~50 USD in Germany. Guess will do some .de online shopping and take gold one as well.
27 comments, nice, guess that
27 comments, nice, guess that means we will see another episode ;-)
Â
P.S. Congrats on 500 twitter followers.
Sweet, lot's o' followers
A lot of my followers arrive from brands it seems. When you show off their products or help them get out marketing information and inform buyers of stuff, they seem to be pleased and "retweet" your stuff a lot :)
Useful episode
I wish this episode had been out when I was trying to pick an orange liqueur to make Mai Tais with. I ended up with the Patron Citronge and it's been pretty good, but having all the different kinds of orange liqueurs lined up makes me want to try other things.
Â
A margarita comparison would be pretty cool. You could also compare two recipies for the same drink.
Bummer, I missed the window :)
Man, so it arrived too late for you're initial decision. However, I've gotta say I was pretty impressed with Citronge. I was totally figuring it would be yet another marketing hype brand like Patron Tequila. But, alas, the Silver tequila episode in two weeks will make clear my impression of Patron Silver :)
Â
Thanks for watching and for the suggestions. I was going to compare the same recipe with different orange liqueurs but that would probably have easily extended it to a 40 minute episode :)
Wonderful Idea!
I've tried a good amount of your recipes since stumbling upon this website. I love the idea of trying different brands, even if people have different pallets they can still get idea of the brands that are avilable. I hope you keep on doing these sort of episodes!
Â
Any more episodes with Amaretto in the future? I know you said you weren't a fan but its my fav.
Amaretto
Actually, Amaretto episode coming out on Monday: Alabama Slammer. This will lead up to Tuesday's Bar Shots episode with Dekuyper's bar shots where I'll remake the Alabama Slammer (pre-show) to compare with the pre-made Dekuyper's brand to see how it stacks up :)
Â
Amaretto is growing on me, I like its subtleness in a drink sometimes. I think I'll find a way to use it in some random recipe invention. Also next week, on Friday (June 5th), I'll be doing a custom recipe: Common Man's Crimson Sky which will include POM Wonderful (and start a contest with them), Cruzan Black Cherry Rum, Creme de Banane and some other fruity juices.
Very awesome, I've never had
Very awesome, I've never had an Alabama Slammer but I do have lots of Amaretto on hand! I'm looking forward to it. Sounds like you've got a lot of great things lined up and I'll have to stay tuned! Keep up the amazing work, you've made me want to mix drinks and experiment with different liquors. :D
Trying to do a month at a time
I'm trying to plan ahead by about a month at a time. I'm at week #3 at the moment. I'm going through collecting all the recipe's people have sent me that I've not used and seeing what I can make from it. Many folks have sent me stuff they know of but don't have an exact recipe so I'm experimenting to find the right "taste."
Â
I also know I've got a Blanco Tequila tasting episode lined up for June 10th. It will include (but won't be limited to), Cielo Blanco, Cavalino Blanco, Hornitos Silver, 901, Patron, Partida Blanco, Don Julio and maybe a few nips. I think I can buy a Cabo Wabo nip too, so I can use some of those to save money.
Â
I've done a lot of tequila reviews on our blog so I've had many companies fire off tequila for review giving me great access to some fantastic brands. I can't promise they'll all be cheap though :)
Enjoyed the episode
I'm new to alcohol and have been doing tastings of my own. I started with beers, moved to meads, a little taquila and am currently doing Irish Creams. If you ever get to Irish Creams, maybe include home made.
Thank You!
Good timing!
Â
I stumbled upon this website just today and ive always been a fan of Grand Marnier, also wondering about the other orange options out there. i mean face it, nobody likes to buy a new bottle of something only to find they dont like it.
Â
so thanks for the tasting, its nice to hear some actuall reviews instead of "this ones good".
Taste is subjective
Great to have you aboard and watching! Yeah, Liquor taste can be subjective... some people love Jägermeister while others think it's awful. Saying it's good or bad doesn't give people a clear idea of "why." In the case of Orange Liqueur (which is much easier to explain compared to Jäger!) I hopped to describe some of the tastes, textures and overall reaction to give you a sense of what might work for you.
Â
If I just said it taste good, that is really my own palate. But, if I tell you it tastes like lemon/lime sprite with a bit of sugar, etc. then you can almost imagine what that would be like based on prior taste experiences with the soda. If you don't like citrus peel or something, that might turn you off to grangala and make you lean more towards a Tuaca or Grand Marnier.
Â
The best I can do is guide and help make some informed decisions, then hope that those lead you down the path of a tasty selection that your own tongue can say "that's good."
Cool Format
Derrick:
Â
I like this new format. Tastings are fun and educational. (plus they break up the recipe format)
Â
Rich
Thanks!
Running the episode was fun, hopefully I don't break the bank buying all the stuff I need :)
I like I like
I like the variation. Looks like i am the Blue Curacao buyer due to being a poor college student and liking blue drinks! Also, your testing info will save me money from all of my testing in the short run, but it would be nice to eventually try all of them myself!
I have enough recipes to last me a while so learning about different brands of the same general liquid is needed. I know the audio podcast teaches about families of liqueurs, but it is much easier to follow here. More information in the video. The audio podcast also has lots of information but the entertainment factor due to randomness takes over. (i love the audio podcast, lots of laughs)
Overall i like both, audio for long car rides, video for quicker information during study breaks. I LIKE!!!!
Keep up the good work!
Â
College Budget
Yeah, Blue Curacao is a great addition to so many drinks. Next week we'll be doing a couple other "budget" style drinks in the form of Dekuyper's Bar Shots. Pre-made liqueur shots including Sex on the Beach, Lemon Drop and Alabama Slammer. I'll do the real shots and compare them to the pre-made Dekuyper Bar Shot brands!
Â
Alabama Slammer in a bottle for around $10.99, no need for all the other bottles to mix it yourself :)
Dekuyper?
Is Dekuyper a brand that premixes the drinks for you? I have seen those and they can be pretty far off from the real thing. Alabama Slammer sounds like a drink worth trying to me (plus I have a good friend from Alabama). Though I must say mixing the drinks and looking like a pro for the buddies is half the fun!
Not really a premix
I guess it's sorta a pre-mix, it depends on how it's all being marketed I guess. It's not like the pre-mix mudslides style of drink, as their not in such a big bottle and don't really cater to those style of drinks, they seem to go more hardcore and simple like the Kamikaze (I didn't get that one though). I'm eager to see how they are.
Â
I'm sure it's not like the real thing but, if you've got a party with a ton of people it may be a cool thing to pass around to everyone to get the party started (or ended!)
orange liquer episode
great idea derrick! i've been confused about the oranges for a while. so definitely keep it working and do tequila or vodka or even gin...gin really confuses me. thanks! enjoy the pods a lot.
Gin tasting
I want to do a Gin tasting, I'll set that up in a bit, first I've got to gather a few more brands. I've got lots of Tequila brands so I'll do that one first. Vodka is a bit light, but I'll look into that one too. Vodka can be very subjective as the spirit is so neutral.
yes
i like the new show - good job. Hit us up w/ some tequila...
Tequila Tasting
I'm looking to start with a reposado tequila cast and do a reposado the next week I think.
Awesome style
I think these types of episodes are awesome. Keep it up!
Great new format!
I always thought your show is great but this one was plain awesome! I'd love to see a series of those, cause I'd like to try out a lot of your great recipes but most of the time don't really know what to buy. Thanks a lot for your podcast and keep it up!
Â
Cheers from austria!
Â
PS: I love those biting comments at the bottom :)
Austria! Sweet!
Nice, Austria represents? You in Vienna? Reason I ask, I see one viewer in my analytics from Vienna Austria :)
Â
Glad you enjoyed the episode, hopefully we'll clear it all up soon. There are way too many colors, brands, bottles in the store to know what to buy!
Actually I'm from Salzburg.
Actually I'm from Salzburg. But just like the Viennese we love coffee! :) So, how about some cocktails including coffee. I'd be happy to hear about one or two of those sometime.
I love coffee too!
I also love coffee, probably too much :) Of course I've got a German background and since that's close to Austria perhaps that's my coffee problem!
Â
Glad to have folks from Austria aboard, I've got a few folks from Germany (a few I know so that doesn't count! :) ) and a few that found the show on their own.
Â
I'll look into some creative coffee selections, might save them for a bit though as it's heating up not cooling down (except for our Australian folks). Let me work on it, we've got some recipes that would work.
Â
Tschüss!
Cointreau Loyalist
Really like this one! Â Super idea. Â I always buy triple sec for the chinsey drinks that I make for friends (Long Islands, Juicy-drinks, etc). Â I have always bought Cointreau for the higher more delicate drinks like the Amaretto Seduction. Â If you look at that recipe, I use Amaretto Di Saronno and Cointreau for the two ingredients you will read in that recipe. Â Incredible drink!
Â
I will have to try the Grand Marnier sometime just to compare the two (i.e. Cointreau). Â I will see if my local store has Tuaca as I would like to try it on the rocks as the weather in Wisconsin is also getting hot!
Â
Great episode, can't wait for the next one.
You're wasting the alcohol
You're wasting the alcohol :-)
Â
If serious, great new twist. Few days ago I was actually standing in the front of Grand Marnier and Cointreau and had no idea which one to buy.
Â
Looking forward for the next episode, vodka maybe (absolut, smirnoff...)?
The sacrifices I make :)
Yes, there is a slight amount of alcohol waste, but I've wasted more experimenting with different recipes anyway :) Plus, I'm wasting a half ounce now to save many people from wasting. So, while we lose a half ounce we could be saving hundreds of ounces in the long run :)
