Surf Rider

Visit AwesomeDrinks.com for glassware and more!

Our first competitive cocktail flavor tasting, we're building the Surf Rider twice to see if there is a difference between Cruzan Coconut Rum and Malibu Coconut Rum. Is there a difference? Should you consider, more closely, the flavorful rum you buy? Find it now, the results might be surprising.

Do you like the idea of a competitive cocktail bake off between two brands?

Great idea!

I love the idea of competitive cocktails! This is what makes the show interesting. Keep mixing it up. Don't be afraid to add new elements to the show, you can always change it back =)

True That

Yeah, sometimes I get these ideas and just roll with 'em :)

I too, like the "Bake off"

I too, like the "Bake off" idea. I have both of these coconut rums, and found the same thing you did.  I prefer the Cruzan coconut and mango flavored rums.

Think I'll go make one of these right now, just to be sure! :)

Mango rum rocks too

Yeah, mango rum is good too, just harder to find practical uses for it. I use it in mango mojito's.

Other types?

I know there's probably dozens of coconut rums, and I know you mentioned Don Q, but I'm also wondering how Captain Morgan's Parrot Bay Coconut Rum factors into the debate? Seems to me that those four are the ones I hear about the most.

Parrot Bay

Oh, Parrot Bay good call, I think I have that down stairs in my liquor cabinet! Hmm.

parrot bay

malibu and parrot bay are main players here when it comes to coconut rums. I know malibu, can you compare it to parrot bay?or the other way round ;)

I like the idea of using different brands in the same episode. As for me, you don't even have to prepare/drink them both. It would be enough to say - hey, I made this one with other brands, and drink tastes different...

Parrot Bay

Okay, next time I'll utilize a different combination, or all of them. I don't have a coconut recipe next week, so I'll try the week later.

Side by side, I prefer Parrot

Side by side, I prefer Parrot Bay's Coconut Rum to Malibu's ... the coconut really comes through better from the Parrot Bay in my opinion.

Malibu is a rum based liquor,

Malibu is a rum based liquor, no?

Kind of sucks though, if one is more intense, drink might end up not so well balanced due to too much or too less coconut.

Proud to be awesome.

Malibu isn't a liquor

No, malibu, by their own account (on their website) is a carribean rum with "natural coconut flavor." So, I'd say it's perfectly fine to compare it up against another flavored rum. It may not be "bad" because it's sweeter, it's just different than the Cruzan in that way.

If you like more coconut style cocktails, I'd go Cruzan at this point, 100%. If you like a sweeter balance, go with Malibu.

How much alcohol does the cruzan have?

How much alcohol does the cruzan have? The malibu sits rather low with a 21%, and due al the sweetness i'd rather classify it as a rum based coconut liqueur myself (aka personal opinion). Mostly because i don't actually taste rum in there, but then again i have never had (or even seen for that part) the cruzan so unfortunally i can't compair the basic taste profiles.

Not that the comparison is invalid or anything, rum + coconut = rum + coconut =P.

Cruzan Rum

I don't have my cruzan rum handy at the moment, but I believe it's 27.5% or so.

  Yep,

Yep, 27.5

Has some recipes as well.

Proud to be awesome.

Great..

Great episode Derrick, good idea to competitive.. ;)
I think that this is a basic thing. No matter what you do, the alcohol will always taste different, depending on who made it. For an example i prefer Absolut Vodka more than any Vodka.. :)

- Btw.. You should try the mudslide cocktail..

( I did applaud)

Mudslide

The difference in these brands was huge, I don't find this to be the case with a vodka for instance. With vodka, you have "good," "bad" and "the same." For the US vodka's, the goal is to distill out all th flavors to the raw nature of the spirit. Then, see who's is less offensive. Flavored rums are slightly different because there are varying degrees of flavor I think you can get (as seen here, sweet vs. a more natural authentic taste).

Next, I'll have to pit Don Q Coco up against Cruzan :)

I did get your e-mail on the mudslide. I love mudslides, they're truly evil cocktails (I used to make them in college I think). I need to find a good portable blender so I can make a frozen one. Might be the wrong time of year for such a drink though :)

Probably

I guess that your probably right about the vodka thing. Its true that most of the time the good vodkas taste about the same. Even tho, I prefer Absolut Vodka because it is "medium" Cheap, and in my opinion it taste teriffic! :)

Yea.. Flavoured rums are a bit tricky in taste of flavours and such, I guess youre right about that.. :)

You could smash your own ice with a hammer - if you bought one ;)
On the other hand ive seen those manuel ice crushers which could be more practical haveing around for drinks, instead of a blender? :) ( you probably wont make all your drinks slushi?)

Hope that you will do a mudslide in the future, and a show about bar tools - like youve mentioned before..

Bar tools

I want to time the bar tools episode later this month, closer to the holidays so that people can get some ideas for holiday gifts. We also have an episode using 10 Cane rum to make a punch (it uses the entire bottle). I'll be pimping that next week.

For those that can gain access to 10 cane, we have spiced packets for the punch to give away (if the bottle doesn't have one on the neck already)

good idea

i like the idea of the competitive thing, though i would probably like it more if i could actually see how it turned out but alas the computer i am currently at is suffering from major failititus and does not play videos

but thumbs up anyways cuz it was probably awesome and insightful

No video!?

No video on your system!? That's awful! Well, if you have quicktime let me know, i can send you that link instead of the flash embedded one.

back to video

pretty much as soon as i got back to my house i watched this because i was curious how huge the difference was

i honestly did not think you would describe such different flavor profiles

and i was correct in guessing i would like the video and find it very insightful...though i am still not sure which rum i would use, i like sweet "fake" coconut and the real thing >.<

Or...

Or do one one week and one the next, see what you graviate towards over time! :)

Half 'n' half?

Maybe the best option is to buy them both and combine them? ^^
