Trader Vic's Mai Tai

Visit AwesomeDrinks.com for glassware and more!

We're re-applying our knowledge from our first episode with the experience of 90+ new episodes when touching upon the Trader Vic's Mai Tai recipe. Hopefully we've progressed since episode #1 last year, we're also going a bit more traditional with the ingredients.

You'll probably want a double old fashioned glass for this cocktail, or maybe a tiki mug with a little extra liquid contents. Add as many cool fruit garnishes as you want to really liven up the drink.

Comments

Orgeat == "Oar-zhat". Not

Orgeat == "Oar-zhat". Not "Oar-Gate". Not pure sugar cane, either--it's almond syrup. And please, use a better rum next time, for the love of everything Mai Tai Roa Ae! Vic used Wray & Nephew 17 -- no comparison to the rotgut low end Appleton you have there. Get some Appleton Extra and do it up right.

...

First of all, if you want to get all proper on pronunciation, at least get it right. The correct pronuctiation is ôr'zhä'. There is no T sound.
Secondly, Derrick said it's "like pure sugar cane", if you were listening, he said its almond syrup before he said that.
Thirdly, why would you mix a 17 year old rum in a mixed drink with strong flavors like lime, sugar, and curacao? Appleton special is a great mixing rum.

So basically your post is one big giant fail.

P.S. Learn grammar.  "Not pure sugar cane, either--it's almond syrup" <-- Nice comma splice.

Oh, hi there, grammar guy

pronuctiation - pronunciation

The Rescue Chopper Has Arrived :)

I like to be more subtle with the anonymous folks so I didn't really try to explain the difference between "like pure cane" and "pure cane" itself--but you did it well (hows my comma splice?!)

Also, just a note for those that care; the reason I said "like sugar cane" is because Torani Orgeat Almond Syrup, the stuff I'm using on the show, has an ingredient list that goes like this (in order): Pure Cane Sugar, Water, Natural Flavors, fractionated coconut oil, ester gum, etc .etc. etc.

The first ingredient is pure cane sugar and the second is water... to me that's as "like pure cane sugar" as you can get without having the cane in your hand and taking a big bite :)

Nice to see folks are ready to stand up and defend the video's, makes life so much easier on me too. Appleton Special is a rum I only use for mixing, you won't find me doing a full review of it in text as a "sipping" drink as it's not really a sipping drink. For that, I'd probably use Tommy Bahama or Depaz Blue Cane Agricole.

Acking a Fool

Haha I must say that was quite a funny exchange. He/she was really going all out at you. No need to be so harsh.

It appears you could have a gang of loyal viewers ready to cyberly (or would it be cyberally?) smash some face with these know-it-all anonymous users. And of course there are always the dumbasses on youtube...

Well...

The thing is, I don't want to disregard anyones opinions if they're going to continue watching the show. The only comments I prohibit are those non-alcoholic zealots that tell me I'm selling the world poison (only had one thus far). Everyone else, I'll listen to their opinion, especially if they've got some facts to work it out.

Youtube, however, is aweful... lots of nice folks but there are some real "winners" that stop at nothing to drop insults. I see no need to insult someone using harmful names, racial slang, etc.

Understandable.

Yeah, I understand. Viewers=sponsors=money haha. But I think you handled it nicely by sticking with your "common man: use what you have" motto.

I'd LOVE better Jamaican Rum!

I'd love to get some better Jamaican rum, hopefully it will arrive in the next few weeks. I've got to look around more, there wasn't much of a selection for Jamaican in the NH store. I've got the lowest of Appleton's brands, yes.

As for pronounciation, it happens... I rarely get it right the first second or third. I found to pronouncations for it, one "oar-za" and the other "org-gay" and both folks swear by the pronounciation. Gotta love that! :)

Of course, as I suggested, use the rum you've got that you love best. That's the way to do it.

I should move...

Stop having all those great contests over there!

More ontopic tho, think i'll skip this one. Not too big of a fan of the blue/orange curacao and sugary things.
But it does fit in rather well with the temperature here at the moment (it was rather warm last week), if it's refreshing that is.

Okay, maybe a Bols genever?

You're in Holland right? I can work up a BOLS Genever recipe, you've had that stuff right?

I'm not a very patriotic

I'm not a very patriotic person at all so it wouldn't really mather where my drink came from, as long as it's good :P. Personally i'm more a rum person, although that could be due some vacation memories.

But i still love watching your videos no mather if i like the drink itself or not. So just keep doing what your good at!

Sweet

I just figured you'd have BOLS Genever since it's from Holland and all that, not really to support the country but because it was highly accessible (or so I'd assume). In any case, glad I'm entertaining enough, I tend to be a bit dorky.

Thank you

Thanks Derrick, you're POM wonderful too!

Mad Props to POM Wonderful

First off, mad props to POM Wonderful for fixing my screwup. Somehow I drew FOUR winners instead of three and they were nice enough to give out four prizes instead of the three they said I could hand out. They really came through, those that won will be getting their stuff in the mail soon, I've got confirmation already.

Now, ya'll can go and bust out some POM Wonderful cocktails and give a bit of the POM juice to your kids to help them grow strong muscles and bones and all the healthy stuff that is attributed to 100% juice. :)
