Whiskey Sour

Visit AwesomeDrinks.com for glassware and more!

The Whiskey Sour is a beautifully elegant tasting cocktail with flavors of sweet and sour, almost like lemonade along with great oak flavors with a great body. This recipe worked so well I've had three more since recording the episode. This is what a great core cocktail should taste like without losing its identity as a whiskey.

bitters

I've recently started making whiskey sours, very good cocktail indeed.
I'm using the recipe given by Robert Hess though - less lemon (3/4oz.), no bitters, but some egg white added. I suppose this is the 'classic' recipe, and that's what I've found in many other places.
I'll get back here as soon as I get me some bitters. My desire for cocktail experiments needs to be fulfilled :)

simple syrup container

Hey beleive it or not a great place to get those kinds of containers for the simple syrup is like a Sally's Beauty supply they sell them in all different sizes and tips.

Whiskey Sour

Can't wait to try this tonight.  I even made my first batch of simple syrup for it.
Here goes nothin' !

You sat there and waited for that didn't you!

999 is a much cooler number anyway.

You bet I did.

Oh my, I saw I had comment 998 and I'm like hmm...at the time, the comments were coming fast and I was watching the Whiskey Sour episode but it was at the start so I opened a new tab, saw reply 999 and then I was like BAM and there's the story of how I went into the history books as the 1000th comment on EverydayDrinkers.tv

Shameless plug there for you Derrick. Although it's rather pointless for people on here as they probably are on iTune and what not but oh well. :P

iTunes

I'm not sure everyone uses iTunes here, not sure the listening habits but I know since I've got more registered users than comments left in iTunes (10 comments in iTunes), I'm guessing most folks here don't use it.

Well adding egg white is a

Well adding egg white is a lot easier than a lot of other things you've done!  You don't cook it first, if that's what you mean by "burning", but the alcohol tends to kill off anything that would be in there.  You can use the egg beaters type stuff too if you want, which is also pasteurized, but it's just not quite the same.

If you're doing a lot of sours, you should definitely do a Pisco Sour while you're at it, which is one that's getting popular, but the white is REALLY important to that one.

the eggs

Alcohol will not kill pathogens in eggs (you know, like salmonella). And the liquid egg beater-type stuff is shitty. A better option is an egg that has been pasteurized in the shell. The whites are really easy to separate from the yolks.

Burning through eggwhites

No, but "burning" I mean consuming the small quantity of eggs we have in the house :) I don't think I have the proper (good) ingredients for a  Pisco Sour, I'll have to look. I'd wait awhile though, considering I believe I just saw that on a different cocktail show ;-)

There are other shows?

Well if you're talking about the show I think you are, that was a re-run anyway ;-)

Eggs are dirt cheap compared to lemons and limes though, at least where I shop, so I don't usually feel guilty about burning through them.

LOL

Okay, okay I'll give the eggwhite's a try and let you know how it goes. You've convinced me.

Yeah, the show I was talking about is Cocktail Spirit with Robert Hess. I don't mind saying it, I was just being a dork. :) I'm definitely not the only cocktail show on the internet and understand they were around first.

That was a re-run!? I was wondering why I was getting daily shows on iTunes from them.

Well, the only reason I

Well, the only reason I started watching your show and not other, was the fact that you actually taste it. Doubt there are more shows that do that.

Proud to be awesome.

You got it!

Yeah, last week they were doing re-runs of the top 5 most commented on episodes for some reason.  Glad you're watching that though!  Robert's show is what I credit with setting me down the path to the cocktail snob I am today.

I know

Yes, I figured that because I saw your comment on the show in iTunes. Not sure why they don't put any effort into iTunes... no album art, nothing.

However, I had the same reaction as one of the commenters on the show when I first saw it... it's boring. It lacks fun excitment and enthusiasm. But, I watch it anyway as there are only a few of us doing the cocktail thing.

I guess I like the less professional demeanor. :)

Haha, good stuff.

Oh by the way, do you know any decent recipes that use Black Sambuca or Brandy? Friends coming down tomorrow and they are bringing some of that along with Blue Curacao (but I obviously know what I'm doing with that, Blue Hawaiians anyone? ;) ) It's St. Agnes brandy in particular if that helps...

Thanks.

PS. If there's any recipes with those in it that are high on juices (pineapple, orange, apple etc as ingredients), please list them as they are bringing some juices...we are mainly looking for more tropical themed drinks but obviously brandy isn't exactly a tropical alcomahol...maybe a branapple? :P

brandy recipes

can't recall any brandy recipes calling for a larger amount of juices.  but, brandy and blue curacao? I know I had a drink with those, just can't recall a name of it. 1oz of brandy, blue curacao and orange juice each. shake and pour to cocktail glass. and I think there was a long drink variant of this recipe - with addition of champagne.

Personally I like mixing brandy with egg yolks - brandy flips and egg-noggs are so good :)

Zombie Cocktail

Juices? Get some rums, make some zombies, good times ahead for you!

As for Brandy, I've only made one or two, I usually sip brandy. Black Sambuca, another good sipping one, all the real sambuca recipes I've seen are usually very few drops of sambuca.

For brandy you can do a sidecar perhaps or any of these: http://everydaydrinkers.tv/recipe/cocktails/brandy

Egg white

Have you tried making it with a little bit of egg white?  That's another part of the classic recipe, and you'll find it makes a really big difference in the texture of the whole thing and really brings it all together.

Also, let me know if you find some of those squeeze bottles because I've been looking for them too!

Egg Wjote

Yeah, egg white is used in the original recipes, but I'm a huge fan of raw eggs in my cocktails. :) I understand the texturing issue and frothiness you get from it, but as a "home cocktail maker" burning egg whites to make a cocktail is a bit of an overkill. Besides, we buy Egg Beaters egg whites, but their not exactly the traditional frothy eggwhite, they're colored yellow and look like regular eggs :)
